According to a 2004 Gallup poll, reported in the Washington Times, 81% of Americans believe in heaven and 70% believe in hell. An earlier Gallup Poll found that 77% of Americans were optimistic about making it to heaven. Very few saw themselves as headed to hell.  How would these same American’s in this Gallup poll respond, if they knew

Few will enter into heaven and many will enter into hell - 1 Peter 4:17-18

In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus teaches many will enter the broad way that leads to destruction, but only a few will enter the narrow way which leads to life

The word hell derives its meaning from the Hebrew (ge-hinnnom), the Valley of Hinnum, which was a pit into which trash, defiled or filthy things were dumped to be burned. This became a technical term for unending torment

In the Bible hell is described as

• a place of outer darkness - Matthew 22:13
   

• the furnace of fire - Matthew 13:42
   

• the lake of fire - Revelation 20:10-15
   

• a place where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth - Matthew 13:50

Hell is not a temporary state of punishment. Hell’s duration is everlasting, without end which means in hell the body will not decay from the fire because, God says it is a place where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched - Mark 9:43-48

When Jesus Christ comes back again, He will judge the world. Those who have obeyed Christ and lived faithfully until death will be rewarded with the beauty and blessing of living eternally in heaven. Those who were disobedient and rebelled against Jesus will be punished with everlasting destruction in hell - Matthew 13:47-50

Let us be encouraged to enter into the strait gate and the narrow way

Enter the narrow way which leads to heaven, not the wide gate and the broad way which will leads to everlasting torment in hell - 2 Peter 1:10-11
